Documentary - Life & Debt

Life and Debt is a documentary based on the economic decline of the Jamaican economy, The movie/documentary looks at this both from the perspectives of the tourists and that of the natives of the island, it tells about the way in which the then Prime Minister Michael Manley resorted to borrowing money from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the stringent measures imposed on the government with the repayment of those loans.

It tells of the low standard of living among Jamaicans as opposed to the beautiful, fun-filled vacations enjoyed by the tourists. It is a behind the scenes look at what takes place in Jamaica that the tourists are unaware of, such as the lack of facilities and social amenities in the country, the fact that the influx of imported goods are causing a huge strain on the economy, as the more goods are imported into the country, the more the locally farmed produce goes to waste. Jamaica was a land of farmers and it now heavily relies on imported goods.

It is a walk on the other side of Jamaica, a satirical side which is not made visible to visitors, as they are only on vacation and not there forever. The film shows farmers who are unable to produce adequately because of a lack of funding. Jamaica, as the movie/documentary depicts is swimming in debt, unable to keep its head above waters so to speak. The economy is one which is on a downward trend with no hopes of resurgence any time soon, as the interest on the debt increases with each passing day.
