Verbs

A doing word is known as a verb. It is used to describe the subject of a sentence and also shows the action. Some commonly used action words are: jump, run, climb, and skip. Verbs also show the state that you are in, such as: is, are, were, was and am. The verb is highlighted in the following sentences:

  • Sean closed the door swiftly.
  • John climbed the stairs yesterday.
  • These plums are delicious.

Verbs are supposed to be used in every type of sentence. Each sentence must show an action that is performed for it to be a complete sentence.

 Nouns

We use Nouns as naming words. They are used to name persons, animals, places or things. The nouns are highlighted in the following examples:

  • The cloudy skies signal the possibility of rain.
  • The boy won the first prize in a race.
  • She bought herself a new handbag for her birthday.

What can be noted from the above example is that there can be more than one nouns in a single sentence.

 Proper Nouns

Proper Nouns are used to describe the names of places, persons and things. They are written with capital letters. A good way to remember the difference between Nouns and proper Nouns is to remember that Nouns are naming words, while Proper Nouns name the nouns. Examples of Proper Nouns are highlighted below:

  • Greg put the leash on Spot the dog.
  • The Honda car was driven off Highway 9.
  • Jasmine wore the red blouse to Marias party.

 Adjectives

Adjectives are used to describe a pronoun or a noun that is used in a sentence. It is often considered a describing word. It is possible for an adjective to come before the word it is being used to describe. (This is a pretty blouse). It can also be used after the word it is being used to describe (That blouse is pretty). One of the easiest ways to remember the use of an adjective is to remember that it answers questions such as which one?, how many?, or what kind?.

The adjectives are highlighted in the sentences below:

  • The rum cake was the best at the pastry shop. The type of cake is the rum cake, so that is the adjective as it describes the type of cake.
  • The old man lives in a dark, scary cottage in the woods. Dark and scary describes the type of house the old man lives in, so they are the adjectives.
  • Only three parents attended the PTA yesterday in the afternoon. Three answers the question of how many attended the meeting, so three would be the adjective.
