Homeless and in college...oouch!!!!!!!

During the summer of my junior year at UC Irvine, university administrators made the decision to close the trailer park community on campus known as Irvine Meadows West and use the property to expand the School of Physical Sciences. The community was made up of just over 100 undergrads and grad students who paid $130 a month to rent trailers and live in the community. With eviction notices in hand, they were scrambling to find an equally affordable living situation.

The idea that a university would allow a trailer park community on campus in the first place was enlightening. It acknowledged that there were students who could barely make ends meet -- students who certainly couldn't afford $1,000 a month to rent a luxury student apartment elsewhere on campus.

In this post-recession era where many families have lost their jobs and homes, the number of homeless college students has also increased nationwide, according to a report by the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth. The number of actual homeless students is hard to pin down because many students who want to fit in hide their homelessness from their peers and professors.
