SACRAMENTO, CA - The word "Negro" appears on the 2010 census as a category for race within the African-American community.
The word is a sensitive issue among African-Americans, according to Betty Williams, Sacramento branch president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She said some people find the term Negro offensive, while others feel it is generational.
Williams said in the 2000 census, more than 50,000 African-Americans wrote in "Negro" on the form. Williams emphasized the importance of filling out the form. In the 2000 census, more than 13,000 African-Americans in Sacramento County were not counted and that resulted in a loss of $2.5 billion in federal funds over a 10-year period, Williams said.
