Applying to universities can be extremely tedious and stressful. That's why I've decided to post a few pointer for students that are planning to further their education elsewhere, however, this post will mostly reflect on American universities but some of the points would also apply to universities in England and The Caribbean as well.
1. Choosing A Major
Before even thinking about applying to universities you first have to choose a major after that decision has been made then you can move unto phase two.
2. Choosing Universities
It is always good to research universities to see if they offer the program in which you choose to major in and how credible the degree and university is. Usually when applying to universities we always have that one particular school that we want to attend " our dream school." However, it is always important to at least have three to five other different universities in which we would like to apply to just in case we do not get accepted to " our dream school." In addition, when reviewing the universities websites it would be an added bonus to request a package. This package will be delivered to your home and include information about college life, courses offered, tuition fees etc.
3. The Application Process
Some universities send applications with their request packages while others may have you complete the first part of your application online. Your application may request your high school transcripts or if you've already completed two years of college in your island, those transcripts should be included as well. You'll also have to provide copies of your O and A Level certificates. Some universities require that you take the S.A.T Reasoning Test. Here is the link in case you are asked to register for it www.collegeboard.com.
4. Opportunites Granted For A Level Certificates Or Doing The S.A.T
When you're application is being processed. The university may change your status from undergrad to either a sophomore or junior based on your A Level credits. Therefore, you'll be able to cut your college years off and lessen tuition fees. Based on your S.A.T score you'll be able to escape the college entrance exams which are mainly English and Math. Futhermore, based on your S.A.T score you could receive scholarships.
5. Student Loan Process
While you wait for notification on whether or not you've been accepted by the university it is always safer to start on your loan process. This way you will AOVID A LOT OF STRESS. Go into the bank and just ask a few questions. Find out the criteria for applying for a student loan and start getting your documentation together a.s.a.p. Once you're done you should only be awaiting your acceptance letter before you take everything to the bank. This will allow your loan to be processed as quickly as possible and avoid the last minute rush.
6. Application Processing Has Ended
There are times when the whole application process has ended and you have not received word of whether you've been accepted or not. At this stage you need to become a "PEST." to the admissions office. Call them everyday if you have to, ask them if you have been accepted or not. Bug them about sending you your acceptance package. If you sit back and do nothing you may receive your information extremely late and not be able to make it for the semester that you applied for.
7. Student Loan Process Part 2
Since you would of eliminated the most tiring and stressful part of gathering the information. You would find yourself only having to add the acceptance letter to the infromation you've already collected and send it to the bank. Along with your acceptance letter you will receive an Application For The Immigration Certificate Of Eligibilty Form and also a Room&Board Application- if you intend to stay on campus. Both forms come with a deadline in which you must return to the college. That's why the earlier you get your student loan approved the better it is for you.
8. The 1-20 Form
After the uinversity has processed your Immigration Certificate Of Eligibilty Form you will receive the 1-20. The 1-20 Form allows you to live in the United States of America for the intended time you wish to study. This form has to be filled out and then taken the Amercian Embassy in Barbados. Here is where you are granted your student visa. Unlike persons who are applying for their usual visa you do not have to make an appointment when you're going to get your student's visa and you always get first preference among other persons. However, you must carefully read your form becuase there is a fee that must be paid online before your documents are looked at. It would be extremely beneficial if you have all of your information organized and waiting for when you go to meet the agent. You must be a fast thinker and speak up when the agent asks questions. If you are organized and well spoken you'll have success in obtaining your students visa. IMPORTANT NOTE :THESE AGENTS ARE LOOKING FOR TIES THAT WOULD MAKE YOU WANT TO COME BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY SO HAVING A STUDENT LOAN WILL ALLOW YOU TO OBTAIN YOUR VISA.
The other steps I would not go through becuase it's basically moving forward from there, such as orientation, meeting your student advisor, moving into your dorm and starting classes. All of which can be an adventure on their own. Only thing I'd advise you to do is make sure that you sign up for your classes as early as possible as all good classes tend to fill up quickly.
