Find someone to talk to
Make sure you have all the information you need about deadline dates and times, where you need to hand things in. Similarly, find out as soon as you can when and where each exam is.
Make a timetable for study/revision, and make it realistic.
Remember to timetable rest and relaxation. Think about what you really enjoy doing as relaxation – it could be anything from watching TV to doing a five-mile run – it’s important to plan quality time for yourself to re-charge your batteries whilst you are studying.
Although you may feel that partying hard is your favourite form of relaxation, think about the morning after – having the hangover from hell isn’t always going to help you get through a heavy workload or a big exam!
Work out where it is you study best – at home, in the library, with friends? Maybe you would prefer to spend some time in the library and some time at home, to vary your surroundings. Make sure you have what you need before you start to study.
Learn some relaxation techniques which may help you to feel calmer and more able to concentrate – see ‘Sleep and relaxation’ in section four of this leaflet
You might find that taking up yoga or t’ai chi, or some other form of exercise helps you to relax. Having some vigorous exercise – playing sport, or even just going for a brisk walk, may make it easier to sleep, relax and stay calm.
When you actually sit the exam, take your time. Don’t rush straight into answering questions; in fact, it is sometimes better to stop yourself picking up a pen for at least five minutes, until you have thoroughly read each question and decided which ones to answer, if you have a choice. Make sure you understand exactly what is being asked. Plan your answers.
If you start to feel panic, or you go blank, close your eyes, and concentrate on your breathing for a few moments. Try to slow your breathing down, as this will help you to feel less anxious.
